The first expansion pack, Barbarian Invasion, was released on 27 September 2005.

This was the first game to encompass what would become one of the most fundamental additions to the Total War series, free map movement as opposed to earlier versions where all movement was province-based. Released in 2004, Rome: Total War is set in the Roman Republic.
